Obituary of Derek Gordon Smith
DEREK GORDON SMITH
June 3rd 1932 – July 1st 2019
Derek passed away peacefully surrounded by family on July 1st.
Beloved father of Douglas (Michelle), Jacqueline (Dave) and Kathleen (Ken).
Loving grand-father to Briana, Jack and Lilly. He had just learned that he was going to have a great grand-daughter at the end of September.
Derek is pre-deceased by daughter Julie, sister Barbara, partner Joyce and his parents Grace and Harry.
He will be dearly missed by ex-wife Sheila (Richard), twin brother Tony (Pat), niece and nephew Christine (Scott) and Russell (Karin); great nephews Yannik, Maxwell, Connor and great niece Lauren, Joyce’s daughter Janice, and Eva (long time companion and caregiver to Joyce and Derek).
Derek was born in Sevenoaks, England in 1932. As a young man he was conscripted into the national service for 2 years with the Royal Air Force as ground crew servicing military aircraft and served an extra year in Sudan. During his service he was recognized for his skill in technical illustrations and marksmanship. In 1956 he got married and emigrating to Canada in 1957 after being accepted for employment as a technical illustrator on the Avro Arrow Aircraft. In Canada he had four children and eventually formed a successful technical art studio in Toronto. Once he retired he was inspired to learn to paint with watercolours and many other media to capture the beauty he saw.
Derek was a positive, cheerful and kind person and a loving father. He was an avid bridge and cribbage player, a devoted Soccer Fan (go Chelsea) and a talented artist whose memory will live on through the many paintings that he’s shared with loved ones.
In our hearts forever.
