Sunday, March 3, 2019I was dismayed to learn of the passing of my friend Gail Hartshorn. I offer my deepest sympathies to Briony and to those nearest and dearest to this wonderful woman. Gail was always known for her candour and her kindness, two traits not often found in the same person but very much alive in someone who was as adept with a canoe as she was with a caring or acerbic comment. Feisty, solid and supportive, funny, learned and loving, Gail inspired the loyalty of those around her with equal ease and intensity. You always knew where she stood, as you also knew that she cared. Gail will be missed by many, as she will be celebrated. Esto perpetua Gail. Ian McFarlane

Saturday, March 2, 2019My heartfelt condolences to Briony, Janet, Michael and family. Growing up in Preston and being younger than Gail, my male friends and I were intimidated by her beauty and worldliness, and worshipped her from afar. As fate would have it, at the age of 18 or 19, when I was a junior reporter at the local paper and slated for duty on the August long weekend (and therefore unable to get out of Dodge like everyone else) Ken Entwhistle (who was also working at Budd Automotive, saving for his university tuition) and I decided there was nothing to do but go to the Kress Hotel on Friday night and lament our bad luck over a few drinks. We had been in the nearly-deserted main room for about a half-hour when in walks Gail, looks around, then comes over and asks if she can join us. Well hello! What followed was one of the most enjoyable evenings I have experienced in my hometown. We just sat for two hours or so, completely relaxed, and talked about our lives, our jobs, our plans and our aspirations. Gail was wonderful in putting us nervous young guys at ease, asking about our families and being a genuinely good listener. At the end or the night, we walked her out to her car, then climbed into my Chevy II to to head home, when Ken asked: "What just happened?" I said:" I don't know, but boy is she ever nice!" From that moment on, I looked at Gail through a different lens. She may have been as shy as we were, I don't know, but she made the effort to have a good conversation with us, and what could have been another lost evening turned out to be a revelation. I have always been grateful to Gail for that small epiphany about gaining maturity. David Coates and family

Although I haven't been in contact with her for a few years, she was a good friend and a treasured teaching colleague at Bark Lake Leadership Camp. My hope is that many of us who worked with Gail in various outdoor pursuits will be able to gather in the Spring to celebrate this outstanding lady. My thoughts today are with Briony and members of Gail's family. Sincerely, Jim Gilchrist

Gail will always be in my heart and the memories never forgotten. My sincere sympathies to everyone who knew her. Briony, we have many more memories to create with Gail in our hearts.
