Doreen Herlihy

Doreen Herlihy

Passed away peacefully at her home at Mackenzie Health Long Term Care on the morning of October 6th, 2019. We are thankful that she is out of pain and reunited with her late beloved husband, Denis.

She is the cherished mother of Christine (Madonna House Apostolate) and Teresa (Christian Mettel), deeply loved grandmother to Darin Tomlin (Jessica), Nicole, Kaitlin, Daniel and Andrew  Mettel. Adored by her great-grandchildren: Dexter, Theo and Noah.

Doreen was born in the village of Princethorpe, England as the eldest of six children. The family survived the WWII bombing of Coventry. She met her future husband, Denis at the youth group of St. Osburg’s Parish. They married in 1948 and they welcomed their first daughter, Christine, in 1949.

Doreen’s dream was always to go to Canada, and the family immigrated there in 1954; the ship dealing with treacherous waters during Hurricane Hazel.

Doreen first worked at Orenda Engines until the famous Avro Arrow project was cancelled. She then found employment with North York Hydro until her second daughter, Teresa, was born in 1967. She then went to work for the North York Board of Education until her retirement in 1992.

She remained active volunteering and becoming involved in church activities. Her faith was very important to her and Doreen made sure all her grandchildren knew that she prayed for them daily. Mom thanked God for her good health and she felt that the Lord kept her here for so long because she had not finished the job He had for her. Although, she wasn’t always sure what that was exactly!

The true joy of her Doreen’s life was her family. Her youthful and positive attitude was a bright light to many even up until the morning of her unexpected and debilitating stroke. She passed away peacefully with her daughters at her side. We will all miss her tremendously, more than words can express.

We extend our deepest gratitude to all of our family and friends who have supported us during this heart-breaking time. It is very much appreciated!

We also especially wish to thank the warm, friendly and attentive staff of Mackenzie Health Long Term Care Team who gave our mother such wonderful care and us such support and comfort.
