Obituary of Evelyn Whitmey
Evelyn Anne Whitmey died peacefully surrounded by her children on March 16, 2017. Eva is survived by her children Neil (Ann), Victoria (Paul), and Nigel (Abigail). She leaves behind beloved grandchildren Chris, Cathy, Giles, Adam, Tacye, Morgan, Molly-Mae and Talia.
Predeceased by her husband E.R. (Ted) Whitmey, daughter Hilary and brother John Parr. Eva was born in Liverpool, England on April 21,1924.
A proud Liverpudlian, Eva was a W.R.N.S. during WWII. She met her future husband Ted, an officer in the merchant navy while volunteering in the library and they married before immigrating to Canada. With her young family she sailed from Liverpool on The Cunard liner Sylvania to Montreal then travelling on to her future home in the unique and picturesque landscape of Peace Country in Alberta.
Eva became the town’s librarian and served on the Library Board of Alberta before becoming the head of Legal Aid Counsel of Northern Alberta.
As a daughter of wartime England, civic duty was of great importance to Eva. She was on the Peace River Hospital Board and was elected as a Peace River Town Councillor and later became the deputy Mayor.
As an avid gardener, her flower and vegetable gardens were her pride and joy.
In 1994, she moved to Richmond, Ontario to be close to her brother, before being drawn to the shores of Lake Ontario where she found the quaint town of Cobourg. There she enjoyed walks along the promenade to the sound of lapping waves. She finally settled in Willowdale, welcomed into the caring Lansing retirement community. Ever a presence in her family’s life, Eva nurtured and advised the family she loved so well into her 93rd year.
